Soy’s Negative Effects – Men’s Health

Filed Under (Nutrition) by Matt on 27-05-2009

I read this article in the latest issue of Men’s Health last night.  I immediately went and checked my protein supplements to make sure that they were mostly whey and casein protein, not soy.  Thankfully they were.

Since I am lactose intolerant, I began drinking soy for a while when I initially found out I had issues with dairy.  My love of dairy forced me to deal with it by taking the Lactaid supplements instead, giving up soy milk.  Even so, I’ve voluntarily had tofu-based meals in numerous forms, including sushi.  You are lead to believe soy is a miracle food: high in protein, low in fat, and natural.  With everything, there is always another side of the coin.

As the article points out, soy is in almost everything.  My Quaker Reduced Sugar Chocolate Chip & Peanut Butter Oatmeal Bar had soy listed in the ingredients three different places.  I am not going to take my diet to the extreme of eradicating soy from it, but it does have me thinking that eating more natural items (plain granola in plain yogurt vs. a processed granola bar) may be the way to go.

In any event, this is a good and important read for any man…
